Why learning is so important

From the moment we are born, we start to process new information and learn skills; this never stops. We are born to learn and the act of learning itself has tremendous effects on our wellbeing that you may never have realised.

There is a beauty in challenging yourself to learn something new. You’ll encounter obstacles which you have to overcome. Every time you find a way around these hurdles, you experience personal growth. This growth shows itself in many ways. It brings a sense of achievement that we all seek. Your confidence grows because you have proved to yourself that you can do it. You have acquired new skills from working outside of your comfort zone. On top of that, certain activities become easier and more accessible to you in the future.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

- Nelson Mandela

The process of learning can teach you new competences and immerse you in diverse experiences. Let’s take learning to play a musical instrument as an example. It trains you in expression, communication and patience, not to mention the rhythm and other musical assets you acquire. You never know what experiences or outcomes are going to be useful for future endeavours. In truth, they all are. All of this learning keeps the brain active. It doesn’t matter what it is you are learning; presenting your brain with new information, skills and experiences keeps it young and healthy. Just as you exercise your body - when you train your brain it becomes stronger.

A mindful escape

We now have a lot more sources of distraction. Our devices grasp our unfettered attention and we tend to lose focus more easily. Learning mindfulness techniques can help focus the mind. Simple practices such as journaling, breathwork and meditation exercise the brain and teach it to observe rather than react. This act of self-improvement can only be brought about by challenging yourself to learn. It allows you to approach things in a different way which broadens the mindset and opens you up to different perspectives. While you can still feel stress and feelings of doubt, you are more aware of them and you will know how to potentially overcome the thoughts. This can change your life, allowing you to achieve more of your goals, improve relationships and live a healthier lifestyle. It requires courage but you are giving yourself the chance to discover a new way of life that’s more satisfying and fulfilling.

Many of us find that learning is a key source of meaning and purpose. As we become stronger and more motivated to try new things, we find pleasure in other areas. It enables us to connect with others and the world around us. Whether you are learning skills or passing skills onto someone else, this act of positive risk-taking rewards you with the social aspect of community. In establishing a mutually respectful and trusting relationship with others, we can feel less isolated. Learning and education also brings with it a sense of belonging and trust. It’s a great way to rebuild your self-esteem.

Never stop learning

Our careers and past education often define us, but it’s time to reevaluate this notion. When you challenge yourself to learn new things (in and out of the workplace), you’ll be faced with great rewards. Everything from a renewed sense of strength to personal growth and greater wellbeing. It can have a positive impact on all areas of the Ora Circle without you ever knowing it.
