What spirituality means

Spirituality is a broad concept that correlates with your life’s happiness. In fact, it is one of Ora Collective’s core pillars that makes up a person’s circle of life. While it is often intertwined with religion, they are not the same thing.

Spirituality involves connecting to something so much so that it results in positive emotions. This deep connection can help you find a sense of purpose through contentment, gratitude and acceptance. There is no one route to spirituality, it is entirely subjective and means something different to each and every person. Chances are you have already tapped into it without realising.

Where does spirituality come from?

The root of spirituality stems from the Latin spiritualis, which comes from spiritus meaning ‘‘breath’’ or ’"spirit’’ (an interesting connection to the power of breathwork in aiding spirituality and our overall wellbeing). It is made up of everyday experiences and involves engaging with the world rather than escaping from it. We don’t have to be anywhere or do anything to experience a spiritual moment. Every person has spirituality. Whatever moves your spirit or energy is part of your spirituality.

Our spirituality is expressed through every thought, feeling and action. Perhaps you feel it at sunrise or driving down the motorway late at night. During these moments, there are no stresses or struggles. We are simply liberated to consider the world from a new point of view. We can experience a range of emotions and an intensified enthusiasm.

How we express spirituality

The way we connect with our spirituality differs from person to person. Some people find spirituality in a religious way through practices, beliefs and rituals. They can turn to their religious faith for strength during difficult times. Others feel inspired and spiritual when doing activities such as listening to music, reading books or walking in nature. It can be anything really. Enjoying the natural world through gardening, hiking, or bird watching; expressing creativity through poetry, painting or sewing; or reconnecting with your body through breathing, mediation, dance and exercise. These moments may be nurtured by the sound of gongs, running water or birds chirping.

Tapping into your spirituality can bring contentment, wholeness and balance back into your life. Through spiritual moments, you can establish a meaningful connection with something bigger than yourself. It changes the way you see and treat yourself and others. When you are so deeply connected to something, you have a more expansive view of the world and people around you. This can ultimately lead to more satisfaction in your life.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way of finding your spirituality. As you explore what spirituality means for you, ask yourself what brings energy and meaning to your life? Are there any particular practices or habits that make you feel invigorated or compassionate? Discovering your own definition is a spiritual experience in itself.
