4 ways to spark joy

4 ways to spark joy.

Happiness and joy are at the core of what helps us live well; they’re essential to optimal health. Many of us find it difficult, or don’t allow ourselves, to experience these ‘fleeting’ moments of joy, which in time, lead to improved happiness. Joy is linked to better sleep, lower stress levels and enhanced immunity. Taking steps wherever possible to feel more joyful can promote better habits and behaviour in the long run and ultimately help you to feel happier. Here are 4 ways you can tap into joy today.

  • Go outdoors

Spending time outside has been proven to boost physical and mental health in numerous ways. This doesn’t mean camping out overnight or spending hours at a time outside, just a simple walk outside to immerse yourself in the fresh air and nature can increase focus and improve mental health. Try to take a break everyday to go outside.

  • Move, move, move

There’s a lot to be said about moving your body. It can be anything from gym workouts to running, yoga or more intense cardio. Easy, gentle movements that we like to call ‘mindful movements’ offer a lot more benefit than you think. Stretch every day for a few minutes, breathe deep and feel into your body. You’ll notice how you start to feel better and loosen up.

  • Smile

There's scientific evidence that forcing yourself to smile has a positive impact on your outlook of life. It can trick the mind and body into feeling better and is even said to be linked to increased life expectancy. Smiling releases endorphins and serotonin that elevate your mood and since smiling is contagious, it can boost the mood of others around you too.

  • Tidy

There’s a lot to be said about your surroundings, work and home environment. Each can impact how you feel joy and happiness. Declutter your spaces, add colour to your wardrobe or rooms and add nice aromas to your home. All of these acts add to the sensory element of how you experience your environment. You could even have an object, photo or inspirational quote that makes you feel good when you see it stored in your car, on your desk or by your bedside table.
